Top seeds Cabal/Farah defeat Kyrgios/Tsitsipas on Tuesday
Andy Murray and Feliciano Lopez have faced a seeded team in the opening round of all three of their ATP Tour doubles events together this season. But while the trend continued on Tuesday at the Western & Southern Open, the popular pair fought back for an impressive 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 win over fourth seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau.
Murray/Lopez broke twice in the second set and cruised through the Match Tie-break to advance in 77 minutes. This year’s titlists at the Fever-Tree Championships (d. Ram/Salisbury) will face Ryan Harrison and Jack Sock in the next round.
Tsitsipas & Kyrgios Open Up On Their Bromance
Top seeds and Wimbledon champions Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah scored an opening-round win over Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas for the second time in as many weeks. The Colombians saved two set points at 5/6 and 6/7 in the second-set tie-break en route to prevailing 6-1, 7-6(8).
“The atmosphere in the crowd was amazing today,” said Cabal. “They’re both great tennis players, so it was a tough match, but we’re happy to win and we’ll see how the draw evolves.”
Cabal/Farah will play Rohan Bopanna and Denis Shapovalov or Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury for a place in the quarter-finals.
