MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University is the first team to clinch a spot in the Final 4 of the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball tournament.
This, after the Lady Chiefs swept Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC), 25-19, 25-11, 25-8 on Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Regine Arocha, the Finals MVP when Arellano ruled the Season 93 tournament, did most of the heavy-lifting and scored a match-best 14 points on nine spikes and four service aces.
The Lady Chiefs improved their record to 7-0 to secure a berth in the Final 4. The defending champions can advance to the best-of-3 finals outright if they take care of their last two assignments against University of Perpetual Help on Thursday and against San Beda University on January 15.
Meanwhile, Perpetual Help bolstered its semifinal chances with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-15 triumph over Mapua University.
Cindy Imbo led her team with 12 points as the Lady Altas jumped to a share of the fourth spot, along with San Sebastian College.
In the men’s division, Arellano survived a stubborn EAC squad for a 25-13, 25-18, 27-29, 16-25, 16-14 triumph. The Chiefs now have sole possession of second place with a 6-1 win-loss record.
Christian dela Paz unloaded 16 points while Kim Vincent Tan and Jesrael Liberato chipped in 14 and 13 hits, respectively. The Chiefs trail Perpetual Help (5-0) in the league standings.
EAC captain Joshua Mina and Joshua Ramilo unleashed 23 and 22 points, respectively, but could not complete the rally down the stretch.
The Generals dropped to 2-3, but remained at No. 4.
In the juniors’ division, EAC surprised Arellano, 25-14, 25-20, 25-19, to improve to 3-5.
The Junior Chiefs fell to 4-3.
