Chennai: More than 2,000 cycling enthusiasts came together, for the Chennai Cycling Thiruvizha, held by We are Chennai Cycling Group (WCCG), on 21 July at Chetpet.
The event that was conducted at Lady Andal School, Harrington Road, commenced with the launch of ‘Pedal Shakti’, a book written by Sundar Rajan, a senior cyclist. This was followed by workshops covering the basics of the sport, safety during rides and commute, self sufficiency and more.
According to sources, “The other topics that were discussed, included how to choose/ buy the right bike, basic bicycle maintenance, fix-a-flat, Ignite yourself a fitness session, Save Nesamani- a first aid workshop and self defence.”
Sruthi, who attended the same said, “It was a day full of fun games with special events for children.”
The organisers stated that the main objective of the show was to promote and increase cycling as a mode of transport.
The group (WCCG), started in the year 2012, has over 10,000 members in its Facebook page, along with 1,000 active riders.
Thiagarajan, one of the founding members, noted that that their group has now spread to various neighborhoods and that the members ride four times a week within the city, and go on long drives on weekends.
“This year, the date of the thiruvizha coincided with the anniversary celebration of WCCG. Therefore, we honoured more than 100 active members who have volunteered by reaching out to people or by conducting daily rides,” he added.
