  • In his NFL preseason debut, New York Giants QB Daniel Jones was 5/5 for 67 yards and a touchdown
  • The Giants’ 2019 first round draft pick is 35-1 to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
  • Is there any value in betting Jones at those odds?

When the New York Giants selected Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall choice of the 2019 NFL Draft, the decsion was derided strongly by Giants fans.

At the time of his selection, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman suggested it was possible that Jones could sit on the bench and watch and learn from two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning for perhaps the first three years of his career.

After one series as an NFL QB, the Giants faithful is prepared to erect statues of Jones.

In Thursday’s 31-22 preseason victory over the New York Jets, Jones engineered a touchdown drive in his only series. He was five-for-five through the air for 67 yards and found Bennie Fowler in the end zone for the score.

The performance did little to alter the opinion of Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur that Manning is his starter. Nor did it sway the sportsbooks.

A cross-section of leading sports betting houses show Jones to be a distant 35-1 in the 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds.

Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley was the NFL OROY last season.

Slow Your Roll on Jones

Those were the words of wisdom Shurmur offered to anyone ready to anoint Jones immediately to status as the team’s #1 QB. Jones is clearly the future under center for the Giants but they remain adamant that this future won’t be now.

They’re determined not to allow any sort of quarterback controversy to develop between Manning and Jones. As impressive as his numbers looked on paper, Shurmur sought to emphasize there were detail aspects to the rookie QB’s performance that would need to be cleaned up.

Jones turned in a 158.3 passer rating in his NFL debut. Manning completed one pass for three yards and the Giants went three and out in his only series at the helm.

No Need to Throw Jones to Wolves

The Giants went 5-11 last season and figure to be terrible again in 2019. It doesn’t make sense to start Jones and turn him into a bullseye for opposing defenses.

Manning has the experience to deal with that kind of heat, not to mention the level of abuse that will be heaped on him with each week’s failure.

Murray Also Shone

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray remains the +150 favorite to be named NFL OROY. The #1 overall choice in the 2019 draft did nothing to deter the expectations being placed on his shoulders.

His NFL preseason debut was a 17-13 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, where Murray was six-for-seven for 44 yards. He moved the Arizona offense quickly and decisively during a drive that began at the Cardinals’ two-yard line.

His combination of accurate passing and elusiveness in the pocket has proven popular with NFL OROY voters in recent years. The last three QBs to win the award – Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys (2016), Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins (2012) and Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers (2011) – were also of this ilk.

Jones was impressive but Murray is the chalk for a reason.
