Detroit Free Press Sports Awards back for second year

The second annual Detroit Free Press Sports Awards, presented by Detroit Area Honda Dealers, is set for June 6 at the Detroit Fillmore. The red carpet event will bring together the best high school athletes in the metro Detroit area.
The guest speaker this year will be Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin.
Eight player of the year nominees in each MHSAA sport have been chosen by the Free Press, and the winners will be announced live during the awards ceremony.
The nominees will receive a complementary ticket and one free ticket for a guest to the event. Additional tickets may be purchased by the general public at sportsawards.freep.com.
Here are the eight nominees for Hockey Player of the Year:
Livonia Stevenson, Sr., F/D
The stats: 14 goals, 17 assists for 31 points.
The buzz: Adamic played defense most of the season but moved to offense during the later games, and played both during the playoffs, where Stevenson advanced to the state quarterfinals. He was a first-team All-State selection.
Trenton, Sr., D
The stats: 10 goals, 16 assists, 26 points.
The buzz: Blanton scored 18 goals and added 32 assists the past two seasons, including 2018-19, when he helped guide the team to the Division 2 state championship game. He earned first team all-state, all-league defense for MIHL, and signed a tender with Aberdeen in the NAHL.
Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Sr., F
The stats: 26 goals, 29 assists, 55 points.
The buzz: Clemons led the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League in scoring and led his team to the Division 1 state title. He was voted all-state Dream Team and MIHL most valuable player.
Brighton, Sr., D
The stats: 27 games, 9 goals, 18 assists, 27 points
The buzz: A member of the all-state Dream Team for a second consecutive season, Erkkila compiled 101 points in 119 career games, leading his team to the Division 1 state championships in 2017 and ’18. Tendered with Fairbanks in the NAHL.
Birmingham Detroit Country Day, Sr., G
The stats: 1 goal allowed per game, .945 save percentage, 8 shutouts.
The buzz: The two-time Division 3 state champions were led by Evola and his 20-4-2 season record when in net. He was voted all-tournament goalie, first team all-state and National Coney Island Michigan Player of the Year. Tendered with the Minot Minotauros.
Orchard Lake St. Mary, Sr., F
The stats: Co-led the MIHL with 25 goals, and points with 53.
The buzz: The scoring machine also earned academic all-state, first team all-state, and Dream Team of the MIHL. Tendered with Aberdeen Jr. A in South Dakota.
Hartland, Sr., F
The stats: 25 goals, 20 assists, 45 points.
The buzz: Larson is the most decorated player in Hartland history, having just been named Mr. Hockey, Dream Team and leading the school to back-to-back Division 2 state titles. His points total led the tough Kensington Lakes Athletic Association, and he has signed a tender with Chilliwack of the BCHL. Teams in the USHL and several college programs are in pursuit.
Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Jr., D
The stats: 28 games, six goals, 23 assists, 29 points.
The buzz: Earned all-state Dream Team, and was a key part of DCC’s Division 1 state championship. His scoring led all defenseman in points in the MIHL.
