The NASCAR Cup Series changed up its schedule a bit this year, so instead of the Chicagoland Speedway race being the first of the 10-race playoffs in the fall, it’s this weekend just shy of the season’s halfway point.
So we have the perfect NASCAR Throwback Thursday to honor that. Things at Chicagoland – which is actually about an hour outside of the Windy City – have always been a little wacky, particularly with its Victory Lane celebrations that have included absurd trophies and the winner getting slimed.
But one of the best on-track moments was in 2004 when a giant inflatable orange went rogue and invaded the XFINITY Series race qualifying.

Brand logos smothering nearly every surface they can are a given as NASCAR events, but this time, it’s actually entertaining.
